A Scandinavian-Inspired Bathroom Renovation: Blending Warmth, Modern Design, and New England Charm

Just under a year ago, I shared the inspiration and mood boards for a project that had been floating around in my imagination for ages: our bathroom renovation. Now, after months of planning, hard work, and plenty of trial-and-error moments, the project is complete—and I can honestly say it has exceeded every expectation.

This wasn’t our first big renovation, nor was it the first time we carved living space out of a garage. But this bathroom felt different. The footprint was smaller, the layout more challenging, and we wanted to create a room that felt functional and beautiful in equal measure. Our guiding vision was clear: Scandinavian-inspired design that felt modern yet cozy, with subtle New England touches woven in.

The result is a space that makes me smile every single time I walk into it.

The Vision

From the beginning, we were drawn to Scandinavian design principles: clean lines, natural materials, and a sense of calm that comes from simplicity. At the same time, we didn’t want the space to feel stark or cold. To balance things out, we layered in warmth—wood accents, soft textures, and earthy tones—to create a bathroom that feels like a retreat rather than just another functional room.

Because this was once part of a garage, we also had to think creatively about how to maximize the layout. Every square foot had to serve a purpose, from storage solutions to how the shower was placed. Our New England roots influenced the details—shaker-style cabinetry, a nod to traditional craftsmanship, and finishes that feel timeless rather than trendy.

The Process

Like most renovations, this one unfolded in stages. We began last spring with design sketches and material samples, and by fall the real work was underway.

  • Layout and Structure: The smaller footprint meant being intentional. We reconfigured walls to carve out enough space for a walk-in shower, a vanity with storage, and thoughtful nooks.
  • Plumbing and Electrical: As always, this was the less glamorous but absolutely essential stage. Running plumbing into what used to be garage space required some problem-solving (and a few late-night calls to professionals).
  • Finishes: This is where the design vision came to life. We opted for light oak cabinetry, matte black fixtures for a modern edge, and creamy tiles that reflect light beautifully. A touch of stone on the countertop added texture without overwhelming the room.
  • Lighting: One of my favorite details is the layered lighting—soft sconces beside the mirror for daily routines, plus overhead fixtures that brighten the whole space. Natural light was limited, but we strategically added a window to make the room feel open and airy.

The Finished Space

Walking into the finished bathroom feels like stepping into a cozy spa. The palette is neutral yet warm: creamy whites, sandy beige, and light wood tones accented with darker hardware. The shower, lined with simple but elegant tile, feels luxurious without being over-the-top. The vanity, with its clean Scandinavian lines, provides just enough storage to keep the counters clear.

What surprised me most was how well the New England elements blended with the Scandinavian inspiration. The mix of modern minimalism and classic craftsmanship gives the room a timeless quality that feels very much “us.”

Lessons Learned

Every project has its challenges, and this bathroom was no different. Working in a smaller space forced us to edit ruthlessly—there wasn’t room for extras that didn’t serve a purpose. In the end, that restraint made the room stronger, cleaner, and more functional.

A few takeaways if you’re planning a similar project:

  • Start with a clear vision. Knowing our design inspiration kept us from getting distracted by trends that didn’t fit.
  • Invest in good storage. A small bathroom needs every bit of it, and built-in solutions can be a game-changer.
  • Blend form and function. A bathroom should work hard for daily life, but there’s no reason it can’t feel serene and beautiful too.

The Joy of the Everyday

Perhaps the biggest reward of this renovation isn’t just the “wow” of the transformation—it’s the way it makes everyday moments feel better. Morning routines are calmer, evenings feel a little more like a retreat, and even a quick hand wash makes me pause and appreciate the space.

It’s proof that even the most practical rooms in a home can be designed with care, beauty, and joy in mind.

As with any project, I learned that renovations aren’t just about creating spaces; they’re about creating feelings. And this little bathroom, with its Scandinavian-inspired warmth and New England charm, delivers exactly that.
