Adding a Splash of Color to My Summer Wardrobe

If there’s one thing my toddler has taught me lately, it’s that life is a lot more fun in color. She adores pink and purple, squeals at anything rainbow, and insists on twirly dresses as often as possible. A few weeks ago, we celebrated our first Pride weekend in town, and she was quick to point out something I hadn’t thought much about: I had nothing colorful to wear.

It hit me then—my closet had slowly transformed into a sea of neutrals. Beige, navy, white, black. Classic and versatile, sure, but maybe a little too restrained. In my effort to build a “practical” wardrobe, I had unintentionally stripped it of the joy that a splash of color can bring.

So, this summer, I decided to change that.

Color as a Mood Booster

It started with two simple pieces from Sézane: the Leo Dress and the Norberto Shorts. At first, I thought of them as experiments—a small step toward reclaiming color in my closet. What I didn’t expect was how much of a mood booster they would be.

The Leo Dress has been my go-to lately. It’s lightweight, breezy, and so easy to wear in the summer heat. The pastel floral print makes me smile every time I put it on, reminding me of my 90s wardrobe in the best possible way. Nostalgic, playful, and yet still grown-up enough to wear on errands, dinners, or even just around the house.

The Norberto Shorts were another surprise. I used to think colorful shorts would be hard to style, but these proved me wrong. They pair effortlessly with basics already in my wardrobe—tank tops, linen button-downs, even a simple navy t-shirt. I’ve worn them with a cozy cotton sweater on cooler evenings, and they still feel fresh and fun.

What I’ve learned? Color doesn’t limit versatility. If anything, it expands it.

Putting It to the Test: A Summer Getaway

We recently spent a few days in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and my new colorful additions truly earned their place in my suitcase. The Leo Dress was perfect for walking through the town’s charming streets and grabbing coffee in the morning sun. The Norberto Shorts kept me cool during a hot afternoon exploring the waterfront and lounging outside.

The best part? I didn’t need much else. With just a couple of colorful staples, I felt put together and confident without overpacking. And my toddler, of course, gave her enthusiastic stamp of approval.

Why I’m Embracing Color

I’ve always loved the idea of a versatile wardrobe, but I’m realizing versatility doesn’t have to mean neutral. A floral dress or brightly colored shorts can still mix seamlessly with classics like tanks, sandals, or a woven tote. Plus, color adds personality—a little spark of joy that makes getting dressed feel less like a chore and more like play.

Maybe it’s motherhood that’s nudging me toward color. Seeing the world through my daughter’s eyes, everything is brighter, more exciting, more full of possibility. Why shouldn’t my wardrobe reflect some of that joy?

What I Wore

  • Leo Dress – lightweight, pastel floral, endlessly wearable.
  • Norberto Shorts – colorful and surprisingly versatile.
  • John Tank – a reliable basic that pairs with everything.
  • Sandals – easy, comfortable, and perfect for summer adventures.
  • Tote Bag – roomy enough for snacks, sunscreen, and all the toddler essentials.

Final Thoughts

This summer, I’ve discovered that adding just a hint of color to a neutral wardrobe can make all the difference. It doesn’t mean abandoning the classics—it means giving them a fresh, joyful twist.

And honestly? I think my toddler had it right all along. Life is simply better in color.
